Question

I'm creating a contingency diagram. Can someone PLEASE help me identify these terms in the given scenarios? I really need help and greatly appreciate it in advance.

(a) labels for all conditions

(b) the behavior; (b) the reinforcement/exstinction;

(c) the S-dee

(d) S-delta.

Scenario 1. You are hanging out at home. The doorbell rings. You walk to and open the door. Your best friend forever looks at you and says hello.

Scenario 2. Raul Peegpen is a candy lover, but candy requires money. Every time he sees Uncle Paul he asks the Unc for some money that Uncle Paul is more than will to give. Raul has done the same thing with Uncle Cadbury, though when Raul asks for money, Uncle Cad keeps doing what he is doing.

Explanation / Answer

For your reinforcement contingencies, you can consider the following necessary terms:

Scenario 1:

The conditioned stimulus is the ring of the door bell. The Unconditioned stimulus ( or the reward) is finding your friend at the door and greeting you after you make the operant response of opening the door.

In this case, the discriminatory stimulus(‘ess-dee’) which will lead to the behaviour being rewarded is the presence of the friend at the door and the friend’s greeting. The stimulus-delta ( or ‘ess-delta’) is the presence of any other person on the door or a false alarm when you find no one at the door after making the door- opening response. Repeated encounters with Ess-delta conditions will lead to extinction of the operant behaviour wherein you stop going to the Door to open It.

Scenario 2:

In this situation, there are two stimulus conditions- uncle Cadbury and Uncle Paul. The money received from either uncle is the secondary reward as it will be used to purchase the primary reward of candies. The behaviour is thusreinforced on a positive reinforcement schedule. the S-R chain is being established between the condition of asking for money( the operant response) and the discriminatory stimulus(ess-Dee) of getting the money.

Here, meeting uncle Paul is the ess-Dee condition as it will lead to positive reinforcement. However, meeting uncle Cadbury is an ess-delta condition and it will lead to no reinforcement in the contingency schedule. Thus, the operant responseof asking for money will gradually become extinct in the presence of ess-delta condition : the presence of Uncle Cadbury.
