Explanation / Answer

The Henry Ford Health system was hacked in October 2017 and it resulted in the compromising the data of 18,470 patients. The credentials of the employees who use the data collection and analysis at the company were stolen and the hackers used the credentials to steal the data. The passwords were encrypted but the hackers were able to access them and use it to the fullest extent. The stolen data contained patient names, dates of birth, medical record numbers, provider names, dates of service, health insurance, medical condition and location. Now the company is planning to increase the data security and install multi-level authentication process for data security. Internal investigation group was created to avoid such things happening in the future.

This case involves all the above-mentioned systems and the company should take required steps to make sure that the stored data is safe. The ethical and management challenges are the personal information of thee patients cannot be stolen. This raises the questions on the ability of the company to safeguard the information. The patients trust the organization with their data and also the treatment record data. So it becomes the responsibility of the organization to stick to their words. The leaked data can harm the personal image of a person in the future and the stolen data might be available on the internet for free. All these things are very difficult to neglect and they can cause serious problems.

The organization should have strict policies for the collection and storage of the data and they should include multi-level authentication process to access the data. Only very few people in the company should have the complete access to make changes to the data they have in the system. The employees should be asked to keep changing their passwords every month without fail. The employees should be trained on the best practices to be followed in data privacy and security and taught how they need to keep the system safe from any kind of cyber attacks.
