For this “Reaction paper” I want you to create a method (using reinforcement only) to increase the frequency of a selected behavior of a family member, a friend or co-worker or even your pet. You will have to observe the subject and then carefully define the behavior that you want to increase in its frequency (for example, you might want to get your son to say thank you more often). This is theoretical only, I am not asking you to actually condition anyone.

Remember, this is a 500-word paper and should be written at the college level. I wasn’t very strict on the word count last time, but grading will become increasingly more difficult, so stick to 500 words (max of 510). This paper will be due by 11:59pm on March 12, 2018.

(Answer) In recent times, the issue with absorption of information from the media is that it tends to be absolute. Opinions are based on “all or nothing” situations and situations are completely black and white. This has led to the lack of discourse amongst individuals regarding current events. Essential tangents and nuances that are able to affect the dynamics of the society are left to inadequate opinion polls and sides.

For this experiment, let the subject be a classmate who might be used to reading only the headline of news articles and might be quick to take sides without adequate information. The goal of the experiment is to encourage the classmate/ friend to read beyond the headline and equip themselves with wholesome information that might enable them to have a scrupulous opinion about a complex matter that affects our society.

The reinforcements that one might use are fairly simple. The experiment would involve speaking with the classmate about at least 2 topics in current events per day. During this discussion, the reinforcement would be that the experimenter would ask at least 5 questions about the details of each topic. These details would encourage a detailed discourse that would not be limited to a side or opinion but rather the analysis of details.

This experiment should have lasting effects if it is carried on steadily and is able to make an impact on the behaviour of the individual and in the way they seek, absorb and analyse information. After a period of about three months, the effects of the conditioning should create an impact in the habitual behaviour of the individual.

In order to assess the behavioural change, it is essential to test the subject in terms of their past behaviour and the change after the experiment. In order to do so, one might speak to the subject about current events after the period of conditioning is complete. The discourse would entail speaking about the details of a few current events. During this discussion, one might test if the subject has stayed informed about the details of the situation and not prematurely taking sides based on sensational media reports of events.
