Social play refers to activities that take place in interpersonal or group interaction with peers which are related to enhancing one’s social skills such as negotiating play roles and game rules, understanding the context for norm specific behaviours in a competent manner, and learning effective communication including listening to others and expressing one’s own thoughts and feelings.

On the other hand, nonsocial play is used to defin the type of solitary activities in which children engage when they are in the presence of peers. social play provides an important context for young children's social, social-cognitive, and emotional development as they tend to perform more gross-motor skills, learn eye hand coordination tasks such as in solving puzzles and it helps them focus their attention on the activities without getting distracted by interactions with others and enhances their capacity to feel comfortable in the absence of caregivers. Both Non social play and social play mark important developmental milestones in the stages of play activities in a growing child’s life as children around 3 years of age begin to move beyond playing alone to proactively seeking other similar aged peers as their playmates.
