Question

Explain the difference between mass and weight. Convert 35 degrees Fahrenheit to celcius and kelvin temperatures. Write the formulas for the following compounds: a) sodium oxide, iron (II) sulfide, barium fluoride, c) manganese (III) oxide. How many grams of zinc are in 4.56 moles of zinc? Write out the chemical formula, and balance it, for the heating of potassium chlorate. For a reaction, explain why the actual yield of products is usually less than the theoretical yield. Which of the following has more atoms: 2.5 grams of hydrogen atoms, or 34.5 grams of chromium atoms? How many grams of sulfur are needed to react completely with 346 grams of mercury to form HgS? Give an example for each of the following chemical reactions: a) combination b) combustion c) single displacement d) double replacement e) metal displacement What volume will 5.6 moles of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas occupy if the temperature and pressure of the gas are 132 degrees celcius, and 9.3 atm?

Explanation / Answer

1.Weight is the force with which the mass is pulled by gravity and is given by = mg

Where m is mass and g = acceleration due to gravity .

2. F= (9/5)C+32

35= 1.8C+32

C= (35-32)/1.8= 1.67deg.c= 1.67+273.15 K=274.82 K

3. Na2O, Fe2S3, BaF2, Mn2O3

4. Atomic weight of Zinc= 65.38, moles= mass/atomic weight

Mass= Atomic weight*moles= 65.38*4.56=298.1328 gm

5. 2KClO3-->à 2KCl +3O2

6. The substances used are seldom pure which leads to difference in theoretical and actual yield.   The actual yield is based on experimental conditions where as theoretical yield is based on theoretical conditions which are assumed to be constant through out the experiment which may not be the case.

Some times are there are side reactions which can also have an influence.

7. 1 gram of H2 is equal to 6.023 x 1023 of Hydrogen atoms.

2.5 gms of hydrogen correspond to 2.5/2= 1.25 moles of hydrogen and hence number of atoms =1.25*6.023*1023 atom

In 34.5 gms, moles of Chlorine= 34.5/71=0.49moles= 0.49*6.023*1023 atoms

So 2.5gms of Hydrogen will have more atoms

8. Hg+S--> HgS

1 mole of Hg requires 1 mole of Hg to make HgS

Molecular weights : Hg =201 and sulphur= 32

201 gms of Hg requires 32 gm of Sulfur

346 gm of Hg requires 346*32/201=55.1 gm

9. N2+3H2--> 2NH3 (Combination)

CH4+2O2-->CO2+2H2O ( Combustion reaction )

, 2KBr+Cl2 ---> 2KCl+Br2 ( single displacement)

Na2S+2HCl- --->2NaCl+H2S ( Double displacement)

Mg+CuSO4- ---> MgSO4+Cu ( Metal displacement)

10. n= 5.6 moles. T= 132+273.15=405.15K, P= 9.3 atm

From PV= nRT, V= nRT/P= 5.6*0.0821*405.15/9.3=20.02L
