Question
You should always verify whether your messages contain sound logic. You can strengthen your logic by avoiding six types of logical inconsistencies introduced in the book: unsupported generalizations, faulty cause/effect claims, weak analogies, either/or logic, slanting of facts, and exaggeration Unsupported generalizations involve unfairly stating all people or parts of a group or category possess a certain characteristic. Faulty cause/effect claims involve unsupported and unsubstantiated statements about how one thing causes another. Weak analogies are comparisons that lack sufficient similarities to support conclusions. In other words, this is comparing apples and oranges. Either/or logic involves unnecessarily reducing or constricting issues to two options or viewpoints. Slanting of facts involves presenting those facts that are favorable to your position. Some people refer to this as cherry-picking the facts. Exaggeration involves overstating the value or significance of something. Read the overview below and complete the activities that follow Jim Edison, a recent graduate from the local university, wants to start a late- night food delivery service targeting students at the university. He and his friends were always dissatisfied with options for food at night during college, so he views this as a unique opportunity. To help him decide how to develop and market his business, he conducted a survey of approximately 300 students. He found the following:Explanation / Answer
Unsupported generalisation- demand among students As they generalised in the beginning that the demand would be high for late night delivery but after looking at the data it seems students order late at night hardly once or twice and the demand is not thay high.
Faulty cause/ effect claims- dissatisfaction as the researcher holds it responsible for there idea being a good one and the need of late night delivery being important rather it could also mean that they dont need a late night delivery instead they good food near the campus in the evenings or in the afternoon. Dissatisfaction from the food taste no where indicates the need of late night delivery.
Weak analogies- late night hours. As the expected conclusions are that students prefer eating late at night and would require something to order good food at that time but this is not supported with the appropriate data
Either /or logic- denand for pasteries, demand for tacos, and pizza delivery as the checklist requires one to decide whether they would order it late night or bot. This is an unnecessary two way option as the food to order completely depends on the other person and his mood so noone can say i would not want to order puzza or tacos or pasteries at all.
Exaggeration- demand for reataurants. I think it has been exaggerated as the results nowhere show the utmost need of a restaurant and it is not that important as well
