Depressants

Depressants inhibits the function of Central Nervous System (CNS), they affect the functions of neurons of the CNS. They increase the activity of neurotransmitter called gama-aminobutyric acid (GABA). The increase in activity of GABA causes reduce in brain activity. This leads to symptoms as relaxation, drowsiness, sleep, decresed inhibition, even coma and death. Most commonly used depressant is Ethyl Alcohol which is commonly known as Alcohol.

Stimulants

Stimulants are a class of psychoactive drugs that increases the brain activity. This causes temporary high alertness, awareness, sleeplessness, and also euphoria. They affect the central nervous system and autonomic nervous system by increasing the activity of neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. The most form of this that is wide use is caffeine found in coffee, and nicotine found in tobacco.

Opiates

Opiates are psychoactive drugs which slow down the functions of central nervous system of the body. They are used legally as painkillers as opiates are effective painkillers, but these drugs are illegally used for having euphoria. An example of legally used opiate is codeine, and illegal opiate drug is heroin.

Hallucinogens

Hallucinogens alters the perception and cognitive abilities of the users by affecting the neural circuits of the brain. This causes seeing, hearing and feeling sensations for those things that really don't exist in reality-the hallucinations in the users. An example of hallucinogens is LSD-25 (lysergic acid deithylamide).

Club drugs

Club drugs are group of psychoactive drugs that affects the functioning of central nervous system by slowing down its activities. It also alters the mood and perception ability of the brain causing hallucinations. It causes euphoria, relaxation, and distortion in perception in the users. They are called club drugs because most of these drugs are used by youth for rave parties. An example of club drugs is Ecstasy or Ketamine.
