Question

Did the volume of air passing in and out of the subjects' lung each minute increase due to exercise? if so was the change due to an increase in the rate of breathing, the depth of breathing(tidal volume) or a combination of both factors?

Explanation / Answer

Beginning with brushing up with basics of ventilation of normal lung at rest.

Tidal volume -is normal breathing inhalation and exhalation without any effort .

Minute air flow-is the same concept as tidal volume ,is a measurement of tidal volume per minute.,hence if tidal volume increases minute volume proportionally increases.

Inspiratory reserve volume -is the extra inhalation than the normal inhalation and exhalation eg:increased inspiratory effort during exercise causes tidal volume to occupy the inspiratory reserve volume (hence Irv decreases during exercise)

Expiratory reserve volume -increased effort to exhale than the normal exhalation eg :during exercise subject tends to exhale more and the tidal volume occupies the Erv leading to decreased Erv

Forced vital capacity-is forced breathing after deep inhalation ,decreases during excercise because of the muscle fatigue subject will be unable to exhale efficiently ,hence fvc decreases during excercise

Physiology of lung during excercise

During excercise the receptors in alveolar vessels ,stretch receptors respond to the change and transmit the information to medulla and accordingly due to increased metabolic rate ,increased oxygen demand medulla signals to maintain the increased oxygen consumption and simultaneously throw out carbon dioxide.

Tidal volume increases during excercise due to increased oxygen demand and hence inhalation and exhalation volume increases during excercise to supply the oxygen demanded by the body .

Rate of breathing -no of breathing cycles per minute ,as explained above during excercise we put muscles ,lungs and heart into action hence the heart starts to pump vigorously to increase the blood circulation to remove the carbon dioxide and simultaneously provide oxygen ,as the process continues lungs and heart work in coordination to increase the respiratory rate .

Hence above explanation proves that tidal volume and respiratory rate increase during excercise.
