Question

For each situation below, choose the one choice from the list that would best represent the percentage of change the situation would cause. Use each answer as often as is appropriate.

These choices are expressed as percentages of change compared to normal values for the same capillaries.

Increase by more than 25%

Increase by 25%

Increase by less than 25%

Zero change

Decrease by less than 25%

Decrease by 25%

Decrease by more than 25%

A. What would happen to the quantity of oxygen in the blood entering the systemic capillaries, if the oxygen concentration in the lungs were to decrease by 25%?

B. What would happen to the quantity of oxygen dropped off in the leg muscle capillaries, if the oxygen concentration in those leg muscles was 25% lower than usual?

C. What would happen to the quantity of oxygen in the blood of the aorta, if the oxygen concentration in the lungs were to increase by 25%?

D. What would happen to the quantity of oxygen dropped off in the kidneys, if the oxygen concentration was normal for that spot but a fever had raised the temperature of the kidneys by 3 degrees C?

Explanation / Answer

a. if the oxygen concentration in the lungs were to decrease by 25%, less amount of oxygen is unloaded to the blood stream of pulmonary capillary and then it is tranported foe systemic circulation. if the concentration decreases by 25% then the concentration of oxygen in systemic ciculation aso dectrases by 25%.

b. if the concentration of oxygen in capillaries of leg muscle decreases by 25 % the amount of oxygen supplying to leg muscle will remain same as the quantity of blood supplying to the organ increases.

c. the quantity of oxygen in the blood of the aorta will increase by 25 % as the oxygen concentration in the lungs increase by 25%. this is because the aorta will unload more oxygen to the tissue from the lungs

d. as the temprature increases the blood supply to the organ increases and as the blood supply increases the oxygen unloading also increases. so the unloading of oxygen increases by more than 25 %
