Question

Bob, an untrained 40 yr old male is running on the treadmill at 5mph and has the following data;

            VO2= 2.27L/min

            HR =153bpm

            Mass = 75kg

            His VO2 max = 2.8L/min

1) What is the relative oxygen consumption for him at 5 mph? How many METs is that?

2) What relative intensity (% of his VO2max) is Bob working at while running at 5 mph?

3) If his 65kg friend Jill is running next him at 5mph and is working at 50% of her VO2max, then what is her relative VO2max?

4) What is the Resting Energy Expenditure (REE) for Bob and for Jill in Kcal/min?

The subject Bob from # 2 trains for 12 weeks on an intensive aerobic training program and increases his absolute VO2 max by 15%. He gets on the treadmill now and runs at the same workload of 5mph. How, if at all, would the following variables change? Explain the rationale of each of your responses.

5) Absolute VO2 at 5mph

6) % of relative VO2max at 5mph

7) Q at 5mph

8) HR at 5mph

Post-training and weight –loss

What if in addition to the 15% increase in his absolute VO2max, the subject lost 10 kg of fat mass? Explain what would change for each of the following vs. just the absolute VO2max improvement of 15%.

9) Absolute VO2 at 5mph (explain)

10) Q at 5mph (explain)

11) HR at 5mph (explain)

12) Relative VO2max (show calculation)

13) Relative intensity as a % of VO2max (show calculation).

Explanation / Answer

1) Oxygen consumption is calculated by the formula,

oxygen consumption = (speed in m/min) x (0.2 ml/kg/min per m/min) + 3.5 ml/kg/min

= (134.11 x 0.2)+3.5

= 26.82 +3.5

= 30.32 ml/kg/min

Relative oxygen consumption is,

= (Body weight x oxygen consumption)/1000

= (75 x 30.32)

= 2274 ml/min

= 2.27 liters of oxygen per minute

MET = 2.27/3.5 = 0.6486 METS
