Question

Why is it advantageous to our survival that our thermoreceptors and novice profs are slowly adapting receptors?
If a person is in a vegetative state he she has no activity in the cerebrum. Why can a person in this state continue to live for a certain period? Does this person feel pain?

Explanation / Answer

Adaptation related to thermoreceptors is a kind of sensory adaptation. Sensory adaptation is the response of the receptors to a particular stimulus. If there is a change in environment, the thermoreceptors present in the skin immediately sense it a send a signal to the brain by firing an action potential. But after some they stop sending signal till there is again another change in the environment, means the receptors are habituated to the changed environment. This is called adaptation. Slowly adapting receptors do not adapt so easily. It means they continue sending the signal to the brain.

Temperature influences the activity of organisms in different ways. Body proteins ( enzymes for ex.) are denatured at high temperature and body water freezes at low temperature. The slowly adapted thermoreceptors continue sending signal to the brain in changed environment so that brain can instruct the body to make necessary changes in the changed situation.

Reptiles and amphibians are cold blooded animals i.e their body temperatures change with the change in environmental temperature. Because of the slow adaptability of the thermoreceptors, their brain continuously get the signal about the changed environment and help those animals survive by making some behavioral changes . They go for hibernation in winter and aestivation in summer. In this way they save themselves from being frozen or excessively heated.

During summer, continuous signal from our thermoreceptors make the brain do necessary arrangements to protect our body from being excessively heated and we sweat.

Vegetative state is the absence of awareness and responsiveness because of damage in cerebral hemisphere. But diencephalon and brain stem remains functional in these persons, because of which their autonomic nervous system remains active and motor funtions also can take place. Their blood pressure, respiration and cardiac function occurs but no responsiveness is shown by these persons.

A person in vegetative state can not feel pain. Cerebral cortex is the area of the brain which processes the message of pain before we sense it. As cerebrum has no activity in this case, the person can not feel pain.
