Question
You are going to be testing a new intervention for helping a group of people exhibiting passive aggressive behaviors. A. What is the independent variable? B. What is the dependent variable? C. Draw a group-comparison design that you might use to conduct this study. D. Discuss the possible threats to internal validity with your proposed design. E. If you were working with an individual instead of a group, you would use a different design. What type of design would you use? Draw an example of what the visualization of that data might look like.
Explanation / Answer
A. The independent variable is the intervention.
B. The dependent variable is passive aggressive behaviour.
C. For this study, using the two group intros group design, participants will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: the experimental group receiving the intervention and a comparison group (controls) which will not receive the intervention. These groups would then be first tested on their passive aggressive behavioural traits before and after the intervention is administered to the experimental group. Their scores before and after the treatment can then be compared to each other to check if there are any differences in within and between the groups in their pre-intervention and post-post intervention scores.
D. There would be some threats to internal validity, particular effects of history. Because the experiment will occur over a period of time, participants are likely to experience several events in their lives that can cause a difference in their pre test and post test scores. For instance, some participants may have started taking counselling sessions for their behavioural difficulties. Such factors can confound the IV-DV relationship.
E. This type of study would require a single subject design. This design would have three distinct phases. In the baseline phase, data would be collected with respect to the individual’s passive aggressive traits. In the intervention phase, the intervention would be introduced and data would again be collected. Finally, in the reversal phase, the intervention would be withdrawn and the subsequent effects of this would be measured.
