I would try to be with my friend whenever I can. I would try to make him/her feel comfortable in sharing the thoughts that are troubling. Once I figure out the reason or cause of the depression I would try my best to help my friend overcome it.
I will say all things that make my friend feel better. I would not make my friend feel guilty of being depressed. If needed I will try to convince him/her to get the medical help and counseling to speed up the thought changing process for getting over the depression.
I would not get other people involved because it will make my friend uncomfortable. My friend would wish to be with only those who are not judgemental. If my friend is willing I will try to get him/her involved in some activities which will help distract from the negative thoughts. It will also be instrumental in overcoming loneliness.
In case my friend is suicidal, I would never leave him/her alone. I will help to solve the concerned problems without being judgemental. Most importantly I will get my friend involved in some activity that he/she enjoys. This might help to relieve him of the troublesome suicidal thoughts.
