Explanation / Answer

Observation means acquiring information from the source. Careful observation refers to actively recording the information by carefully watching and listening to the source. Example: Act of watching and counting number of fishes in aquarium is observation, whereas carefully classifying the fishes according to color and size is careful observation. Careful observation is process where we acquire essential information more attentively and analytically.

Critical thinking is an ability to analyze the available facts and figure data in an objective manner to make a judgment or decision. Critical thinking is essential part of life where decision making in imperative in all walks of life. Example: Analyze the number of signals generated in radar and decide the response according to strength and frequency of signal (practical application of Signal Detection Theory). Another example is analyzing demand and supply to decide on how much to produce.

Careful observation is the first step towards critical thinking. Selective attention can be observed here. Correctness of the information influences the decision making. If the information acquired by not providing attention, then the information may not be appropriate for analysis and even result in wrong decisions. Careful observation ensures the information acquired attentively and enhances the correctness of data. Example: While driving car in traffic, if no selective attention to signal light given, then we might break lane discipline resulting in penalty or even accident. Here, the decision to stop at signal light depends on careful observation of signal light. Critical thinking needs relevant information to analyze and come into prudent decision. Hence, we can say that careful observation is a first and essential step for critical thinking.
