What is the relationship between careful observation and critical thinking?

The habits of mind that characterize a person strongly disposed toward critical thinking include a desire to follow reason and evidence wherever they may lead, a systematic approach to problem solving, inquisitiveness, even-handedness, and confidence in reasoning.

According to a definition analysis by Kompf & Bond (2001), critical thinking involves problem solving, decision making, metacognition, rationality, rational thinking, reasoning, knowledge, intelligence and also a moral component such as reflective thinking. Critical thinkers therefore need to have reached a level of maturity in their development, possess a certain attitude as well as a set of taught skills.

Observation is the active acquisition of information from a primary source. In living beings, observation employs the senses. In science, observation can also involve the recording of data via the use of instruments. The term may also refer to any data collected during the scientific activity. Observations can be qualitative, that is, only the absence or presence of a property is noted, or quantitative if a numerical value is attached to the observed phenomenon by counting or measuring.

It is the nature of an individual to organize and to adapt. Adaptation occurs through 2 processes: Accommodation and assimilation. A pull.

Equilibrium is developed from the pull of accommodation and assimilation. And, disequilibrium is at times a part of that process.*] Thus, Intellect grows through TWO PROCESSES:

2. Accommodation - Occurs when existing ideas are modified to fit new requirements. (Child begins to spend money and is forced to alter ideas about what "more" and"less" mean--a dime isn't worth less than a nickel.)

What is the difference between the denotative and connotative meanings of words?

Denotation is the dictionary meaning of a word. Connotation is the emotional overtones or nuances that the word is understood to have, but which don't necessarily show up in the dictionary.

So, for example, the words "youngster" and "child" both have the same denotation. However, they have slightly different connotations. "Youngster" seems more of a playful, light-hearted word while "child" is more neutral.

Another example is the difference in connotation between the words "house" and "home." They can both mean the same thing, but "home" has a much warmer connotation than house.

What is the difference between the following four standards of determining factuality: verifiability, reliability, plausibility, and probability?

The standards - verifiability, reliability, plausibility, and probability are very important indetermining facts, so I believe we should all be cautious and follow these rules when we are provided with facts and information. And as we learn, facts are a bit trickyand sometimes can be biased so we have to keep our eyes opened.

What is the role of feelings in the thinking process?

Thinking is cognition. It is an awareness of self, your surroundings, your past, your experiences, your needs and wants, your aspirations and your hurts.

You are a sum total of your experiences. The brain wires your experiences. The brain is a complex array of electrical impulses and chemical reactions. Everything we are aware of is recorded in the brain.

Feelings are born of experiences. We learn as children about hurt, sorrow, happiness and so on. We gather information about our world and adapt to fit in.

We feel our senses which are wired into the brain. We learn what hurt is, we learn what sorrow is, we learn what hate is. These sensual experiences are recorded with chemicals that reflect the emotion. Anxiety is recorded with chemicals that can cause us depression, anxiety, and psychological problems.
