Personality refers to the characteristics of a person that are enduring but relatively stable in nature. There have been various theories of personality which are as follows:
Freud and neo-Freudians theories were based on the structure of personality that is unconscious mind, pre-conscious mind and conscious mind. Neo-Freudians basically focused on the personal conscious and collective conscious. Alfred Adler and Karen Horney were associated with this theory of personality.
Neo-Freudians unlike Freudian mainly focused on the personality development as an aspect of childhood experience and the future goals that are developed in the middle ages, as compared to only focusing on childhood experiences.
Traits are referred to the dimension of the personality that influence as person's thought, action and emotion. These were the result of the Freud's interest on id, ego and superego.
These traits are mainly the pre-dispositional facts that affect any individuals behavior in a particular situation. Using this perspective, the behavior of an individual that is observable can be categorized.
Gordon Allport and Raymond B Cattell are associated with the trait theories.
Learning refers to a relatively permanent change in the knowledge, behavior as a result of the experience.
Learning contributes to the physical and mental growth of an individual, where he/she gains experience through various activities in his life. It helps the individual in getting adjusted to new environments. Learning also helps in modifying the behavior of an individual.
BF Skinner and Ivan Pavlov are associated with learning theories
It is based on the Gestalt principle that whole is better than its parts. The main focus of these theories in on the subjective experiences and the perceptions of an individual. This view emphasizes the fact that individuals are only responsible for their growth which they can bring on their own by being motivated and modifying their own reality.
