Let’s assume we’re interested in understanding the relationship between impulsivity and novelty seeking in teenagers.

1a. The factors of interest are impulsivity and novelty seeking (both are personality related traits).

2. Null hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between impulsivity and novelty seeking.

Alternate hypothesis: There is a significant positive relationship between impulsivity and novelty seeking.

2a. There is a positive relationship between the two factors, that is, we hypothesise that they have a positive correlation with one another.

2b. This implies that as one factor increases, the one one will increase as well.

3a. I would choose teenagers as participants for the study.

3b. The methodology would be using two personality questionnaries (each developed to measure the factors of interest)

4. Because the aim of the study is just to understand the relationship between the two factors, it is not an experimental study. We are simply measuring what is already present in the participants. Ethically as well, we cannot induce impulsive or novelty seeking behaviours in the participants; these are personality traits that are inherent in the participants.

5. The result would be that teenagers who are impulsive also tend to engage in novelty seeking behaviour. Thus, being spontaneous would be associated with a search for new experiences as well.

6. This is an example of an applied research because we aim to test our a problem occurring in the real world. The aim of the research is not theory testing or theory development.
