Question

For each Unit's discussion you start with a possible 10 points.
The 10 points for each unit's discussion breaks down as follows:

1 point for posting your initial post by Thursday night at midnight.

1 point for beginning your post with a title of approximately 5 words. This helps everyone navigate through the discussion thread as we add comments throughout the unit.

1 point for addressing the subject matter in the discussion thread- at least one aspect of the subject matter is discussed

1 point for addressing ALL of the questions or topics presented in the original discussion thread.

2 points for accuracy. This does not mean you should refrain from including your own personal interpretations or ideas, but that you should be careful when including incorrect facts. A quick internet search will often give you the exact specifics of historical facts when you are unsure.

1 point. Respond to at least one other student throughout the unit. These responses do need to be substantial. Refrain from one sentence responses. Refrain from simply agreeing with another student without adding additional thoughts or rationale. (1 point for each additional post that adheres to these guidelines for 2 points maximum.)

1 point for adding something substantial to the discussion not previously covered by a classmate. (This can be in your initial post OR in additional posts.)

1 point for correctly citing all ideas not your own. (in all posts)

1 point for correct spelling and grammar. (in all posts)

Byzantine conventions of representation differ significantly from Jewish and early Christian traditions. Identify Byzantine examples that illustrate these differences for the presentation of human figures. How do their characteristics reflect Byzantine faith and practice?

Explanation / Answer

The Jewish or the early Christian traditions were quite conservative. As mentioned in the Old Testament they did not support the worship of any visual representation or the art in the form of images, icons or narrative. However in the Byzantine conventions the icons were used for the purpose of worship and depicted the religious incidents, the scenes from Bible or sacred persons such as the saints. The icons also had the images of the Christ, the Virgin and the angels.

The icons left the viewer to make out the hidden spiritual meaning of the images on the basis of personal religious and cultural knowlege. These images were suggestive of hidden messeges. These represented the Byzantine faith and the practise of icon worship. The Roman emperor Leo III had ordered the destruction of Byzantine icons since he believed that it angered the Gods. These people who wanted to destroy the icons were called the iconoclasts.
