On a microscopic level, plastic deformation corresponds to the motion of dislocations in response to an externally applied shear stress. A slip system is a slip direction and a slip plane hi combination. Slip systems vary with crystal structure, but the slip plane often has the lowest atomic density and the slip direction is along the most widely spaced rows of atoms. The critical resolved shear stress is the maximum stress required to initiate dislocation motion (or slip), and it depends on the yield strength and the orientation of the slip components. Materials are strengthened by restricting dislocation motion. The four main strengthening mechanisms in materials are: (i) grain-size reduction, (ii) solid-solution strengthening, (iii) strain hardening, and (iv) precipitation hardening. Recovery, recrystallization and grain growth are mechanisms by which materials evolve to reduce their dislocation density and therefore, then total internal energy. Strain hardening (deformation) and annealing treatments can be used to achieve an optimum combination of strength and ductility.
