Pretend that you are a colonist who left your home in Europe (or who has been taken from Africa as a slave) to settle in one of the North American colonies. You are writing at some time between 1607 (when the English colonists reached Jamestown) and 1700 (the end of the seventeenth-century, roughly marking the transition between "settlements" and more mature colonies). Tell your family and friends about your experiences. You may talk about travel, life in the new colony, your family in the colony (if you have one), your hardships and/or successes. Try to be analytical: If your life has been hard, provide specific details to explain why. On the other hand, if your experiences have been positive, provide some specific evidence to explain why. If your life is better or worse than you think it would have been in Europe, explain why. Dear family,

Hope everyone is save and all of you are doing well. Since I have been transported to the Americas as a slave, I have had experiences that I wouldn't like to relive. The conditions over hear haven't been very welcoming, though I would say that my condition has even better than my peers over here. I've got a good master. Yes, I'm saying that my owner is good, since he at least provides me with food, that too twice a day, which the others might get once or twice in a week. My master is good, since he doesn't hit me all the time. His hunter slams only come once an hour in the entire day. Though, this duration might increase if I've committed some mistake. My master is good, he lets me sleep 3-4 hours a day, though I sleep along with the horses, I do get time to rest, whereas some of my peers do not even get that. Moreover, my master has provided me with two sets of clothing, most of us around receive only one. My master doesn't abuse me on my colour, but I don't understand why the colour would be a point of abuse for other masters as well. My master has treated me as a slave, but his treatment of cruelty, as I would say, is the minimum that anyone good get hear. Yes I'm away, I'm not as I was back at my home, where I would be amongst all of you, we would laugh, cheer, celebrate and have a free life. My condition here is bad, but I know, if this wasn't my master, maybe I couldn't have even written this letter.
