Question

As indicated by the toy isle of any store, there is an abudance of toys geared at infants and toddlers. Your task for this discussion is to visit the toy store (or your child's toy box) and identify 2 toys targeting some age range under 2 years old (for example, "newborn" or "3-6 months" or "18+ months") to critique according to what you know about infant/toddler development. Specifically, I would like you to find one toy that you would recommend for a child under 2 years of age AND one toy that you would NOT recommend for a child under 2 years of age. For each toy, identify its impact on biosocial, cogntive, and psychosocial development. In your analysis, be very specific on the features of the toy that would influence (or fail to influence) age-appropriate development.

Explanation / Answer

A toy I would like to recommend are toy building blocks. This can offer benefits in enhancing motor skills as well as cognitive ability. For example, the whole act of assembling pieces together, by picking them up and staking them would lead to a development in fine and gross motor skills. Cognitively, assembling these blocks together would mimic a task which requires problem solving and decision making. Also, these blocks can be assembled in varied ways which allows the child to experiment with different models, thereby fostering imagination and creativity.

What I would not recommend is buying toys that are associated with any kind of violence, specifically you guys. Existing gender norms usually prescribe such toys to boys over girls, however the ill-effects are the same. Many studies have demonstrated that shooting at objects is a destructive act which can make children aggressive. More so, even presenting angry faces that are usually found on these toys can have a negative impact on the child.
