Module 5; Section One. Before the arrival of the white settlers. the various ecosystems of the Sydney Basin provided the food for the D'harawal Peoples, but it was found that not all the foods were suitable for all of thoe people, ll of the time, and many people had reactions to certain types of food. A system was developed, long ago, to ascertain who could eat what foods, and this was applied to the child as soon as it was weaned. The test was a simple one, firstly, the substance was crushed and rubbed onto the back of the child's hand, if there was no reaction, for example swelling or blistering, or even discomfort, then the crushed food was rubbed vigorously on the inside of the elbow, then again, if there was still no reaction, it rubbed onto the skin under the arm, if again there was no reaction, it was rubbed onto the outer part of the lip. Finally, it was rubbed on the inside of the lip, and if there was no swelling, discomfort, blistering or adverse taste, then the food was deemed safe for the child to eat. If, at any stage there appeared any reaction, then that food was forbidden to the child. Once the child had learned to speak, and was able to identify the foods of concern, it became the child's responsibility to remember what foods it could eat, and which foods it could not. Module 5; Section Two. The soils of D'harawal Lands are quite poor in nutrient, and in particular, the nutrients required by our medicine plants to produce the effects needed to treat certain sicknesses. For thousands upon thousands of years, The People have recognized that those plants required for our medicines needed to be growing in associations with other plants. Early botanists and explorers remarked on how, when they asked their Aboriginal guides abouta certain medicine plant the guides replied that it was no good. The botanists and explorers failed to ask why it was no good, but were puzzled enough about the reply that they remarked about it in their notes. The reason that the same species of plant growing in one place, will not produce the same medicinal effects as another of the same species growing in another position is very

Explanation / Answer

The story "How Wobat Lost His Tail" is written by France's Bodkin. France's in his beautiful story tries to teach children of The People about living with earth, the mother, in peace and harmony. He tries to explain that each one has to obey the laws and also apply them in their practical lives. There are other lessons like ; the wombats have no tail , it is important that if we seek advice from those who know more than we do , it is wise to pay attention and obey the advice ; other being that it everybody is your friend just like the lizard ,people will sympathise but not everyone is trustworthy and last , just because the lizard was a fake friend to the wombat, whenever he feels threatened or gets a fright , his tail will drop off and he has to grow a new one. This reminds us that when we pretend to be something we are not that which we gain through the deception, It will not bring happiness , only pain.
