Question

Think about ONE study that you have participated in so far (or read about, if you are completing research summaries as an alternative to participation).

1. What parts of the study do you think were intended to comply with principle of Respect for Persons?

2. At the start of the study, you should have been provided with an informed consent document that described the risks and benefits of the study. How did this, or other information you received, demonstrate the beneficence of the research?

3. Many studies involve some amount of deception-- participants may not be told the exact goals of the research, or given some kind of false information. Did this study involve deception? How do you think deception fits into the ethical considerations of the Belmont report?

Explanation / Answer

1. The part of the study that complied with the principle was when I was given the informed consent form. My participation in the study was completely voluntary. I was told that I could terminate my participation in the study at any point that I chose to.

2. The informed consent demonstrates the beneficence of the research because it lists out all the risks and benefits of the study, thereby ensuring I was fully informed about the research. This would help prevent that all possible harm that can occur is minimised.

3. Although the study I participated in did not involve any kind of deception (as I only had to fill out two questionnaires) but deception is used by many studies to obtain results. In the Belmont report, it would fall under the application of the 'Beneficence' principle to assess benefits and risks. Here, a researcher should consider if the benefits significantly outweigh the risks. Only in such a condition is deception justified.
