Question

Hi all,
I'm working on a psychology project for school and need to interview people of different age groups about friendship. Can you take a few minutes to answer the following questions, as well as listing your age? Thanks!
a. How can you tell someone is your friend?
b. How many “best” friends do you have?
c. How long have you known your best friend (pick the longest friendship)
I. How do you know this person is a best friend?
ii. What are some characteristics of this relationship that helps you to determine this is a good relationship?
iii. What are some ways that you and your best friend complement each other (e.g. she is calm and keeps me focused; we both love to do sports; we can make each other laugh)
iv. How has your relationship changed over the time you have been friends?
v. Why do you think these changes have occurred?
vi. If you remain friends for another 10 years, how might your relationship change and why?

Explanation / Answer

a. How can you tell someone is your friend? - When they would be standing with me in any situation and accept my faults and still be a friend without judging me.

b. How many “best” friends do you have? - I have 8-9 best friends.

c. How long have you known your best friend (pick the longest friendship)- 12 years.

I. How do you know this person is a best friend? - met them in school

ii. What are some characteristics of this relationship that helps you to determine this is a good relationship? - they are the first person I would want to tell any good news, subsequently, any bad news, or when I would be said, they are the first person I would want to share my feelings. I know my friends do not judge me, and I don’t mind being open in front of them. Also, I don’t always need to take care of my actions, I know I can be stupid and they would still not judge me. Hence, i know it is a good relationship, since I can be myself without pretending.

iii. What are some ways that you and your best friend complement each other (e.g. she is calm and keeps me focused; we both love to do sports; we can make each other laugh). - she is the best listener, I could call her at any time and talk and I know she would be ready to hear. Though, there was a time, where due to education, we were in different states, and didn’t meet for almost 6 years, and the distance never really seemed to be.

iv. How has your relationship changed over the time you have been friends?- the start was slow, but over the time we have helped each other prepare for interviews, move on through break ups. We have matured over time with growing age, but our friendship still seems to be the same strong.

v. Why do you think these changes have occurred? - these changes have occurred since with growing age a person matures with job and studies involvement, that doesn’t allow the same 3 hour conversations on call. That’s the only change observed.

vi. If you remain friends for another 10 years, how might your relationship change and why? - I do not think there would be much change in our friendship, since we have spent almost half of our lives being friends. There are almost 3 different stages of life we have gone through, school, college, and job phase, with witnessing the death of one of the parents. What I know is, for the next 10 years we might get married and have kids, but our friendship will still be the same, and probably it might become an extended family.
