Explanation / Answer

Self Determination Theory explains how motivation plays an impotimpo role the lives of people, and how extrinsic and intrinsic motivation play their role in creating determination to carry out any task. This theory explains that intrinsic motivation play a major role to motivate individuals to do things with enjoyment, contentment and determination, and the extrinsic motivation factors too play important role in motivating people but a slight difference in the factors of extrinsic motivation keeps the individuals from doing things.

The exercise behavior of Alicia is extrinsically motivated, she exercises because she wants to maintain her body in slim shape and toned. This extrinsic motivation makes her feel that it's a chore for her and an added stressor. This undermines her Autonomy to create a regular exercise pattern that is relaxing to her and which she may enjoy.

Alicia fails to develop a competence in her exercise behavior because she is not really interested in exercise. Alicia cannot find a relatedness with her exercise behavior as most of her friends have the tendency to go to a bar, while she alone goes for the workout. This also tempts her to go with them and she feels it more relaxing than her exercises.

Alicia's adherence to exercise can be improved if she does those exercise that gives her enjoyment and relaxation while keeping her body in shape and toned. Her personal trainer should consider to include exercise in which she is competent and that gives her sense of relatedness, this will increase her autonomy over her exercise behavior and she will follow it on a regular basis with enthusiasm.
