Question

Explain how that statement relates to the key words describing new media: "manipulate, converge, and instant."

We now live in the real world of instant information; that’s good and bad. The more advanced society becomes technologically, the more people begin to depend on computers and other forms of technology for everyday existence. This means that when a machine breaks or a computer crashes, humans become almost disabled until the problem is resolved. This kind of dependency on technology puts people at a distinct disadvantage because they become less self-reliant. Dependency, less value in human workers, great discoveries in all industries and new media, and cost efficiency are all outcomes of these simple tools.

In the modern world of today, technology plays a big part in the new media. There are advantages and disadvantages to this. The advantages of new technology is that it keeps us up to date with current affairs. Information is more accessible especially with the internet and message alerts on mobile phones. The disadvantages is that we depend in a way on technology like mobile phones for instance. A mobile phone is like a piece of clothing, we put it on in the morning and take it off at night. There are more new demolishes being introduced to the world so it influences everything. “The convergence of new methods of communication with new technologies shifts the model of mass communication and radically reshapes the ways we interact and communicate with one another” (Burnett & Merchant, 2015). Most technologies described as “new media” are digital, often having characteristics of being manipulated.

Technology advances show people a more efficient way to do things, and these processes get results. For example, education has been greatly advanced by the technological advances of computers. Students are able to learn on a global scale without ever leaving their classrooms. But then, what happens when online learning portals shut down or go through scheduled maintenance? I just experienced this issue last week.

Explanation / Answer

The author describes new media and technology with "instant" information, this word is used to explain the speed at which the information is delivered and the speed with which it effects the lives of the people.

The author uses this word to describe how new methods of communication merge with the new technologies, and how this merging is creating newer modes of communication with huge impact in the way of interaction and communication among the people.

Manipulate here refers to that aspect of the new media in where informations can be skillfully handled and operated. The merge of technology and communication allows to have control what information should be given instantaneously, and what should be done kept back.

Thus, these three key words describes the main apsect of the new media and how they effect the way of communication and interaction.
