Question

Hi. Please help me with a response to this discussion answers. Thanks.

#1. For this week’s discussion, I watched the musical The Greatest Showman (2017). When comparing it to the horror film I watched for last week’s discussion, the two movies have virtually nothing in common except that both films could be classified as dramas. The Greatest Showman was loosely based on the life of P.T. Barnum who started Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The film was a musical that my children and I thoroughly enjoyed (My daughter can’t/won’t stop singing the songs from the film). The film was different from Gerald’s Game (2017) in that it was a work of fiction scribed by Stephen King. The Greatest Showman was a musical that also was an autobiography. After watching The Greatest Showman I felt energized and upbeat; Gerald’s Game was emotionally draining and left me feeling uneasy and slightly creeped out. The Greatest Showman is comprised of fairly large star studded cast that filled out the lead and supporting roles. Gerald’s Game contained a very small cast that accounted for two lead roles along two minor supporting roles. The cinematography and special effects played a significant role in The Greatest Showman. It was fairly obvious that there was a considerable amount of computer-generated imagery (CGI) added to the film. Every time a scene included lions or elephants you could tell that it was CGI. Especially at the end when Hugh Jackman rides an elephant to his daughter’s ballet recital in downtown Manhattan. Another instance of special effects I noticed was during a love scene in which Zac Efron and Zendaya are expressing their love for one another while flying around on a trapeze. Lastly, every circus scene contained special effects and CGI in which fire was expelled from every angle while circus members are flying around the screen.

#2 Musicals are a very special and entertaining form of film. Musicals often feature music throughout the film and the characters sing songs. In our class content it showed Good Morning- Singin' in the rain. This musical was released in 1952. The musical that i watched was Frozen. Frozen was released in 2013 and was an immediate success much like Singin' in the rain. The film were different because Frozen was animated and Singin' in the rain was not. Back in 1952 they did not have the computer technology and animation was not available. In the movie Frozen, they used many different special effects to enhance the movie. One special effect is they used long view cameras to capture the emptiness of the room that Elisa was trapped in. Another special effect is they used darker toned colors to make it seem chiller in the room. Lastly they use sound as a special effect as the music is being played or sung throughout the movie.

(Answer) #1 “The greatest showman” and “Gerald’s game” are truly two very different films. The stories, motive and undertones are varied. The characters, themes, tropes and props that the films rely on are very different indeed. However, the characters in the film are equally essential to the film itself. “Gerald’s game” might have been a creepy film because it had a strange story that is typical of a Stephen King horror or psychological thriller. On the other hand, one might consider that P.T. Barnum was heavily fanaticised in the film because he treated the circus animals very poorly and his employees were deprived of several basic rights. One of the biggest controversies surrounding the film is that it glorifies a man who had a very different personality from the films.

The unethical way in which the animals and circus members were treated back then, would be a source of outrage today. Human and animal rights activists wouldn’t like a man like Barnum being shown in a positive light and his life distorted for the sake of a musical. With “Gerald’s game,” the story tries to outline the potential consequences of a seemingly novelty action. The film might be “creepy” because it makes the viewer imagine the fear that the protagonist feels if they were in their position. This is the purpose of most successful horror films.

#2 Firstly, Disney’s Cinderella and Disney’s Alice in Wonderland are just a few of the examples of animated films released prior to 1952. Cartoons like “Tom and Jerry” were also successful animated shorts with good background scores. It is true, however, that Fred Astaire films are quite enchanting despite the lack of effects and technology.

With technology, digital manipulation, sound mixing etc. today, filmmakers attempt to have all of the audiences’ sense involved when fully experiencing a film. The story is seen in the colour scheme, emotions are felt through the score and the imagination is tickled through CGI.

However, even today, the most important aspect of the film remains the story and whether or not it can capture the audience. “Singing in the rain” and “Frozen” essentially have a story that is able to captivate the target audience successfully. That is why they are both quite popular even today.
