Question

Hi. Please help me with a response to my classmate's discussion response. Thanks.

I believe it is possible to separate the content from the filmcraft. Filmcraft is the artistic development of the film. The content is simply the content. Art is not always nice to look at, yet in still it is art. The content and story in The Birth of a Nation may have been horribly insensitive and racist, but that does not mean the film wasn't crafted in such a way that experts would call it a "good movie." A "good movie" is supposed to evoke emotion and capture your attention, I think this particular movie did just that for most viewers than not. The most recent movie that comes to mind, is "Get Out". This movie was not racist I would say, but it did bring out uncomfortable issues that we currently deal with in today's world, all while bringing a sense of comedy in the plot. This movie was considered to be a "great film", although depending on how one felt it could be considered irresponsible and or a "must watch". I believe we should respond with an open mind, and watch the film for the art that it is, but be strong-minded enough to remain true to one's morals, and self-belief. -When the KKK are riding in on their horses with flags, the people are looking upon them as if they are saviours coming to save the day. They look like an army of heroes. -The scene about the riot a Masters Hall, depicts African Americans, as uncivilized human beings with no respect. They are shown eating in a sloppy manner, drinking and putting their feet up and taking off their shoes. -A scene portrays an actor in blackface raping a white woman. Which attempts to demonize the black race and essentially make African American the "enemy" in this film.

Explanation / Answer

Movies are exaggerated reality, so most of the movies will have more imagination built into the reality in order to make it more appealing. I agree with the discussion post that movies are just movies and people should treat it only as an entertainment but there are certain things that mar the image of a particular race, culture or even gender which evokes some negative emotions or help the oppressors uphold their superiority. Although it depends on who produces and directs the movie but it would only prove the ignorance and arrogance of the White people who are still adamant in accepting everyone as equal.
