Question
Hi. Please help me with a response to my classmate's discussion response. Thanks.
Is it possible to separate the content from the filmcraft? Yes, I do feel as though its possible to separate the content from the filmcraft. However, I do not see why we should.
If art should serve beauty and truth, can great art be in the thrall of hateful ideologies? Can we still find beauty in such an ugly past? Is it reasonably “okay” to enjoy viewing such art with such a message? Great art can be in the thrall of hateful ideologies but it does make people feel uncomfortable while watching. I believe it also depends on how the information is displayed. If it is a story thatbhas happened and went down in history I think it is safe to show that to people. There are movies that have been made that display racial slurs that they claim were accidental.
Are there more recent films, TV shows, music, pieces of art that press against the same types of issues? If so, how do we/should we respond to them? There are other movies like Rosewood, Higher learning, and the great debaters are all about racism. People may have responded to these movies with anger as to why are African Americans always portrayed as uneducated.
Identify at least three specific moments in the film in which film craft is used to either deify the white "heroes" or demonize African American characters.
1. The moment where the whites were on their horses and the people saw them as heroes.
2. White men were willing to kill their own wives and daughters just at the thought of them ever being with a black man.
3. African Americans were also portrayed as being aggressive and angry people.
Explanation / Answer
Mass Media brings popular culture and people try to imitate. Movie is one of the most influential mass media which penetrate the minds and hearts of the people both with its aesthetic aspect, emotional aspect, social aspect as well as the entertainment aspect. Although movies are taken for entertainment purpose, at times it brings out the mindset of the majority of people in order to show them as superior group in the society. This is not a healthy trend because White people still don’t want to accept Black people as equal and when the Blacks are projected as the superior character in the movies, it doesn’t get much attention or appreciation. It’s an unhealthy trend and it should change in the film industry.
