According to Gillian Rose, the study of urban culture has largely unfolded through three broad methodological approaches:  representing the urban, evoking the urban and performing the urban. She introduces the idea that we need methodologies which are sensitive to the contemporary political and social realities in order to interpret the plethora of visual stimuli surrounding us. She examines how one interprets images—not looking necessarily for the truth, but with some justification for the interpretation. Compared to a statistical methodology, for example, the methods used to interpret visual images are not "neutral." The multilayered analyses of the visual culture entails understanding the underlying text of power relations, the politics of pleasure, of desire and sthe nsual experiences which are made possible in visual representations such as art, tv shows, cinemas, camera photographs, and advertisements.

We can understand our culture through various visual representations. Further, there is not a single way of interpreting, but rather multiple ways. Rose examines such diverse approaches as semiology, psychoanalysis, discourse analysis, and content analysis.
