Question

In a role-playing scenario, a client is seeking help for persistent headaches and problems sleeping.
The client believes that stress may be part of the problem with her symptoms. The client is female with headaches that occur three to four times a week and some lasting all day. Ibuprophen helps, but the headaches are not just on days of extreme stress. She is single at the age of twenty-nine and is a part-time employee which she hopes will manifest into full-time employment. It is also hard for her to sleep so much so she has a prescription for sleeping medication.

Using the above information, how could i identify the opening techniques i will utilize to build rapport with this client and how could i identify types/examples of questions i want to avoid during this interview?

Explanation / Answer

The opening techniques that I will utilize to build rapport with this client include;

1.      Check our appearance making it attractive

2.      Remembering the basics of good communication i.e. being culturally sensitive and being a good listener

3.      Finding common ground.

4.      Creating shared experiences.

5.      Being empathic.

6.      Mirror and matching the mannerisms and speech appropriately.

7.      Asking an open-ended question to get personal information.

I can the identify types/examples of questions I want to avoid during this interview by considering the culture of the person and nature i.e. personality type of the person. Generally, we should avoid asking questions directly about a person’s faith, personal life, race and ethnicity as it will make them uncomfortable.
