UNIT Section Date REVIEW Check Your Understanding Critical Thinking and Application Questions 5 enters the blood, and carbon dioxide leaves the blood and enters the lungs. The respiratony is composed of two extremely structure in the lungs known as the respiratory membrane is where gases are exchanged- oxygen leaves the lungs and mem brane thin layers of simple squamous epithelium. Explain how the structure of the respiratory membrane follows its function. 2 Predict whst you think might happen if the respiratony membrane were instead composed of two layers of stratified squamous epithelium. Explain. in nrotein componentExplanation / Answer
1) The two pleural membranes of lungs are separated by serous fluid which makes the membrane moist and slippery. This fluid lubricates the surface of the lungs and separates the pleural membrane so that the lungs can move easily within the thoracic cavity.
According to the simple squamous epithelium membrane structure it is known that this is composed of single layer of thin and flat cells in which one side of the surface of epithelium membrane is opened to the outside of the cell and the other side inside the cell. As membrane of the lungs is simple squamous epithelium so it can exchanges gas from outside of the environment to the inside of the cell and vice versa.
2) If the respiratory membrane is made up of stratified squamous epithelium then exchange of gases would be difficult from outside of the environment to the inside of the environment. As we know that stratified squamous epithelium membrane is composed of multiple layers of cell which makes the membrane thick and thus the gases exchanges will be difficult.
