UNIT Section REVIEW Check Your Understanding Critical Thinking and Application Questions 1 Extremie starvation can lead to a loss of fat from the adipose capsule of the kidney. This leads to drooping of the affected kidney, a condition called nephroptosis. Explain why a loss of the adipose capsule can lead to Ans has advanced kidney disease. As part of her routine lab work, her physician monitors her complete blood count to check the number of erythrocytes in her blood. The most recent test demonstrated that Ana had a much lower erythrocyte count than normal, leading her physician to diagnose her with anemia. What is the relationship between Ana's kidney disease and her anemia? 3 wonders how the cells of the renal tubules and ducts of the collecting system obtain oxygen and Your lab partner nutrients when their capillary bed is located only in the renal corpuscle. What is your lab partner misunderstanding about the blood flow in the kidney? Explain his mistake to him. Female patients suffer urinary tract infections, or bacterial infections of the urethra and urinary bladder, more frequently than do male patients. Why do you think this is so, considering the anatomy of the female and male urinary tracts? 4 25 Urinary System Anatomy UNIT 25 687Explanation / Answer
1. nephroptosis: it is a inferior displacement or dropping of the kidney, the adipose capsule and renal fascia protect the kidney from injury and hold them in their normal poistion, but in extreme sarvation or anorexia nervosa , rapid weight loss , the amount of adipose tissue is decreased and leads to nephroptosis. 2. Relationship between kidney disease and anemia:the kidney which is healthy produces a harmone called erthropoietin which helps the bone marrow to make red blood cells, but when kidney is diseased or injured they cannot produce enough erthropoietin by this bone marrow makes few blood cells, it deprives the body of the oxygen, causing anemia. 3.The kidney is the organ which filters the blood resulting in the formation of urine, the unit of filtration id renal corpsules and the unit of kidney is nephrons , the blood flow to the kidney is from aorta to renla artery to segmental artery to interlobular artery to arcuate artery to cortical radiate artey to afferent arteriole to glomerulus to efferent arteriole to peritubular cappillaries to interlobular vein to arcuate vein to inter lobar vein then to renal vein.( in glomerular capsule the blood is filtered then it passes to the proximal convoluted tubules then to loop of henle then to peritubular cappilaries ). 4.The female are prone to urinary tract infection then males because,of their anatomy, the female urethras are much shorter than male urethras so the bacteria has to travel nearby distances to reach bladder, and the urethra is located near the anal oifice and birth canal so it is easy for bacteria to reach the bladder from these two areas.
