Explanation / Answer
1. Social loafing can be defined as the phenomenon that is observed when a person does not work hard enough, limits his/her actions in the view of the division of the work amongst the group. This could be to the reason that even if the performance is monitored, There is a chance that even if the individual performance slack but the group performance is satisfactory, the project will be completed on time with no consequences.
2. Free riding can be considered as a problem where when a party gets the benefit of a good, resource or service, they do not pay for it. This, in turn, causes the underprovision of the goods. This can be used to understand the relationship between an employee working in a group and as an individual. There are three things that can be taken into account;-
A. Diffusion of responsibility: Because the efforts are pooled in by the group, individual efforts are considered to be less affable in the case.
B. Reduced sense of self-sufficiency: Which means that an individual considers their effort to have no impact and to be of a lower value than the others.
C. Sucker Version; Since no employee wants to work and not get credit for it, all the employees do not work till the point they know what the other team members are doing, to save them from doing all the work.
3. Effect of social loafing can be lessened by:-
A. Providing individual target to all the members of the team or the group.
B. Carefully monitoring the input of all the workers for an individual's performance review.
