Question

? What is the function What is a sarcomere? What type of tissues contain sarcomeres of a sarcomere (hint: what does it help muscles do)? 7. Describe the following terms: actin, myosin, dark bands, light bands, M line, and Z disc. 8. What is a neuromuscular junction? What is its function? What are the components? What type of neuron is found in the neuromuscular junction? Draw a diagram. 9. 10. What are the distinguishing characteristics of skeletal muscles? 11. What are the distinguishing characteristics of cardiac muscles? 12. What are the distinguishing characteristics of smooth muscles?

Explanation / Answer

7. Sarcomere:

Sarcomere is the basic structural and functional unit of striated muscle fibers. In muscle fibers there are tubular muscle cells, containing myofibrils. Sarcomeres are the repeating units in the myofibrils, which appear with alternatiing light and dark bands, when observed under the microscope. In the sarcomeres there are protein filaments, which slide on each other, during muscle contraction and relaxation.

Tissues in the sarcomere are: Myofibril.

Main function of sarcomere is in the muscle contraction and relaxation. Due to sacromere only muscle fibers appear striated. Due to presence of light and dark band, muscle contraction occurs.

8.

9. Neuromuscular Junction: A neuromuscular junction is a site where muscle fibers meet the motor nerve axons. There are four types of cells present there, namely, Schwann cells, Muscle fibres, Motor neurons and kranocyes. Synaptic cleft is present which is a gap between a nerve cell and a muscle fibre.
