Complete Writing Exercise #20 on page 214 in your textbook. Your message should be written as a professional letter in Microsoft Word.
You are the hiring manager for a mid-sized company. You have narrowed the applicants for a managerial position to two: (1) a 22-year-old college graduate who interned at a different division of your company two summers ago but has no additional industry experience and (2) a 48-year-old MBA with over 20 years of experience related to your industry. Although the older candidate is better qualified, your budget restrictions will not allow you to meet the older candidate’s salary requirements. Whom do you hire? Indicate the medium you would choose and draft a bad-news message to one of the applicants.
There is no correct or incorrect answer for who you decide to hire and who you decide to reject, however you must explain the reason for your decision. In addition to writing the rejection letter, include a short paragraph that discusses your reasoning. This short paragraph can be written on a second Word document or at the bottom of your rejection letter on the same document. It should be a minimum of 150 words

Explanation / Answer
As the hiring manger of the mid sized company, I would hire the 22 year old college graduate. The medium I would choose to revert back to the candidates would be E-mail. The following is the rejection letter to the 48 year old candidate.
Dear Mr. ABC
We would like to inform you that we have taken the decision to proceed with other candidates for the position that you applied for in our company. It was a very tough decision for us as we found your background and experience to be very strong but we had to select a candidate that fulfils our current requirements more closely.
We thank you for the interest that you had shown in our company and the time you had invested since applying for this job. We have saved your resume in our system for future reference. We wish you the best of luck in your endeavours.
Sincerely
{Name of hiring manager}
The reason why as a hiring manager, I opted to select the 22 year old candidate was that he would provide the exuberance that comes with youth. Although the older candidate has prior field experience, but the complexity and the type of problems faced by companies is changing quite rapidly. As a mid-sized company, it is important to have people that come up with creative plans to solve these new age complex issues. The candidate already has experience of the work ethics and functioning of the company as he had interned there before. He would thus be able to gel well with the staff. Although the candidate would have to be trained and some money would thus be spent on his or her training, the salary requirements of the candidate are within the budget constraints of the company. On the other hand, the older candidate with all his experience, would not compromise on the salary. Thus the best option seems to be in selecting the younger, more energetic 22 year old college graduate.
