Question
You once again attempt build a monster for sprinting, but your creation collapses about five second into the hundred yard dash. You realize that it has run out of energy and know that you forgot to add which muscle energy production system(s)?
a. aerobic respiration
b. creatine kinase
c. lactic acid fermentation
d. myokinase
e. none of the above
You are developing a monster and wish him to be a world-class sprinter. How would you design his leg muscles?
a. few large motor units containing fast glycolytic fibers
b. few large motor units containing slow oxidative fibers
c. many small motor units containing fast glycolytic fibers
d. many small motor units containing slow oxidative fibers
e. none of the above
please include an explanation about which motor units would be better ( ex why would it be better to have few large morotr units rather than many small motor units)
Explanation / Answer
1. Lactic acid fermentation.
It is because sprinting is a non aerobic action. In this the initial 4-5 seconds are supported by creating phosphate group by increase in ATP and later increase in lactic acid concentration thus increasing H+ concentration, which supports.
2. a. Few large motor units containing fast glycolytic fibres. This is because large units support strength of muscles whereas small units are responsible for first movements. And glycolytic pathways are required for sprinting.
The small units will not support initial quick movements, and will work slowly.
