Question
Directions: You will read the following scenario and student response and then respond to the question at the bottom.
The stomach has two types of secretory cells; chief cells and parietal cells. Chief cells secrete an inactive form of a protein digesting enzyme (pepsinogen), which requires energy for synthesis. Parietal cells secrete acid (HCl) that activates pepsinogen, and requires energy to do so. Both cells have an abundance of mitochondria for ATP production. However, only one of these cell types has an extensive rough ER and abundant Golgi stacks.
A student was asked the following question: which cell type would require extensive rough ER and golgi stacks?
The student responded:
Chief cells. Because a cell that is extensive in rough ER and Golgi stacks has the function to synthesize more fat than protein, and in this scenario, chief cells are doing so.
1. Is this answer incorrect or correct?
2a. If it is incorrect, what needs to be improved,
2b. If it is correct, what physiology defends their statement?
Explanation / Answer
Answer 1. Answes is incorrect
Answer2 .cheif cells have extensive rough er ER and Golgi as it has function to secrete large amounts of protein secreting product called pepsinogen. They have extensive Golgi apparatus as they have to secrete the pepsinogen outside the cell.
