Protection: The skin forms the cover around the internal tissues and organs to protect them from mechanical injury by bumps and knocks.

Maintenance of body form: The skin is quite firm and successfully resists an external and internal pressure on it thus, maintaining the shape of the body.

Safety aganist sunburn: Melanin of the epidermal cells gives protection aganist the visible ultraviolet rays of the sun. These rays cause sunburn.

   The skin also helps in maintaining water balance, helps in excretion, helps in regulation of body temprature etc.
