Question
You are a newly hired desktop technician at a company with a network of Windows 7 computers. You have been given the task of configuring several new computers to automatically download and install updates on a nightly basis. The company has recently installed a server running Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), which the IT director wants all of the workstations to use to retrieve their updates. The director plans to install Active Directory servers on the network in the near future, but they are not available yet. How would you explain the procedure you must perform to configure the Windows update client on the computers?
Explanation / Answer
Go to the Control Panel, Windows Update, Change settings, and set to automatically update, everyday at the time you want.
There is a problem with this in that all the computers must be running in order for Windows Update to work. If it was my choice, I would have Windows update to run soon after starting time for the day. That way if there is a problem, it can be fixed promptly and you don't have to have a bunch of computers running at night consuming electricity when you don't have to.
