Question
You are going to assemble 1,000 bolt + hole combinations. The bolts have a mean diameter of 1.000 cm, normally distributed with standard deviation of 0.010 cm. The holes have a mean diameter of 1.030 cm, normally distributed with standard deviation of 0.015 cm.
When it's time to make an assembly, a bolt and a hole are randomly selected from supplies of parts with these characteristics. If a pair doesn't go together because the bolt is too big (same size or larger than the hole), that pair of parts is recycled. After trying to assemble 1,000 pairs, how many have to be recycled?
Do this problem both by integration (as in the Powerpoints), and by generating 1,000 pairs of random numbers.
Explanation / Answer
Here is the matlab code for the problem:
bolts = normrnd(1,0.010,[1000 1]);
holes = normrnd(1.030,0.015, [1000 1]);
count=0;
for i=1:1000
if(bolts(i) >= holes(i))
count=count+1;
end
end
