Question
I do not have XL2007/2010 now, but I probably will soon -- as well as Win7.
However, the people I work with all have XL2003 on WinXP.
I presume that when do Save As in XL2007/2010, it will default to an XL2007/2010 file, which I believe has the extension xlsm or xlsx depending on whether or not there are macros. Right?
I know that I can override the default on individual save basis. I also know that the other people could convert the XL2007/2010 file, in theory. The fact is: they are not sufficiently computer-literate to handle that.
But rather than remember when to save this or that file as XL2003 compatible or do the conversion myself, it would be easier for me to simply always save as XL2003 compatible.
Can I configure XL2007/2010 so that Save As will be XL2003 compatible instead, which has the extension xls?
Assume I stick with XL2003 compatible features.
But BTW, just how difficult will that be? That is, will XL2007/2010 sneak in incompatible features without my knowing it?
For example, when I have received XL2007 files and converted them for use with XL2003 on WinXP, sometimes I get "warnings" about ActiveX widgets being ignored. I think the explanation was: that's what UserForms have become in XL2007/2010. Right?
Perhaps I should ask a different question....
Perhaps it would be easier for me to install XL2003 (Office 2003?) on Win7 in addition to Office 2007/2010.
Will my Office 2003 for WinXP CD work for installing it on Win7?
Explanation / Answer
You can set Excel 97-2003 format as default "Save As" format:
Office 2003 will work on Windows 7.
