Question

You are a regional director with a multinational manufacturing firm, and one of your biggest customers is a retail entrepreneur headquartered in Japan. Two months after you successfully fulfilled a new contract to produce merchandise for this customer, he asks if you and your spouse would attend the grand opening of a new store. Of course, you attend because it would be an insult to him if you did not. When you arrive, he asks your spouse to cut a large red ribbon across the doors of the new store to begin the ceremony. A week after the grand opening, your spouse receives a package from the customer. In it is a pair of solid gold and gem-encrusted scissors engraved with the date of the grand opening of the store. Returning the gift would insult your customer, but accepting it would clearly violate your company's policy. How should your respond to this situation?

Explanation / Answer

As scenario describes above situation, as a regional director of the company, my spouse received a very precious gift and returning back would be a great insult to him. But if I accept that gift then it would violate the company policy. In this scenario, what could be done is that you have to accept the gift and do an auction for the same. Whatever money has been received from the auction should be put into any charity work being carried out by the customer. This will return back the money and should be justifying the company policy as well.

Also on the other way round, it is your spouse who has received a gift and not you. That means if company does not restrict your spouse from taking the gifts then you can accept and keep the gift and in return you should also share a worthy gift for your customer thanking him.
