Question

Given that the average seek time on a hard disk is 45 ms and rotates at the rate of 12000 rpm with 200 tracks, calculate the time needed to access all the data.

Note: Take average rotational latency into consideration and assume one entire track is read during one disk rotation

Explanation / Answer

Solution:

seek time= 45 ms

Rotational latency= 12000

Average rotational latency

12000 rotations take s 60s

in 1 sec= (60/12000)/2= 0.0025 s= 2.5 ms

Transfer time= 60/12000 * 200= 1 s= 1000 ms

time needed to access all the data= 45 + 2.5 + 1000= 1047.5 ms= 1.0475 s

Please provide a poitive feedback, Thanks. :)
