As Production Manager, formulate a priority scheduling plan for managing the production of goods based on incoming contracts. Specifically, is first in-first out a sound approach? What about other priority schemes? In addition, document the maximum capacity of the production department and determine if receiving, production, or shipping is the rate limiting resource with regard to capacity.
Explanation / Answer
Being a Production Manger while formulating a priority scheduling plan for managing production have a good understanding the flow ie how material move along the processes, between each work station. The production flow define which part of the overall production process can flow easily, which part needs direction and which section need the highest level of control. First in First out queue will be a sound approach as the production involves two or three processes are streamed into a single process or department.
A production manager has to analyse and ensure that the capacity is significant to cope with the usual variations that the company can expect over a month of production. If one section of the process is a stand out bottleneck, other lean tools like set-up reduction and preventative maintenance will also need to be brought in. In FIFO method one must know the minimum and maximum amount of product you expect, this will help to establish how much area you physically need to create this queue.
Keeping daily track of work in progress over a period of time will show how well the production system is going and how good was the initial analysis. This information will help in further refining the flow in the production system. FIFO system is s very good way to control the movement of products between machines or areas of inflow.
