Explanation / Answer

1.Error Correction:

Use of simple parity allows detectionof single=bit errors in a received message. Correction of theseerrors requires more information, since the position of thecorrupted bit must be identified if it is to becorrected.(If a corrupted bit can be detected, it can becorrected by simply complementing its value). Correction is notpossible with one parity bit since any bit error in any positionproduces exactly the same information, i.e., error.

2.ENQ/ACK:

–       ENQ/ACK coordinates which device may start a transmission andwhether or not the intended recipient is ready and enabled. See fig10.4

–        Using ENQ/ACK,a session can be initiated by either station on a link as long asboth are of equal rank.

–        In bothhalf-duplex and full-duplex transmission, the initiating deviceestablishes the session.

–        In halfduplex, the initiator then sends its data while the responderwaits. The responder may take over the link when the initiator isfinished or has requested a response.

•         Thepoll/select method of line discipline works with topologies whereone device is designated as a primary station and the other devicesare secondary stations.

•        Multipoint systems must coordinate several nodes, not just two.

•         Thequestion to be determined in these cases, therefore, is more thanjust, are you ready? It is also, which of the several nodes has theright to use the channel?
