Question

Research and discuss with your colleagues two health care challenges in the future for public or private health care organizations. You must select two challenges and discuss: How will these challenges affect patience and the health care organization? Be specific as to which type of health care organization you are dealing with [i.e. HMOs. PPOs, POS, urgent care centers, physician outpatient care surgical centers, etc.]. Peers are expected to demonstrate critical thinking in their questions related to the classmates’ descriptions.

Explanation / Answer

Challenge 1

The most prominent challenge in the US healthcare industry is perhaps the increasing cost of care. The healthcare expenditure is 17.8% of the GDP and is expected to grow up to 19.9% by 2025 as estimated by CMS. The problem is not the increasing cost but the deteriorating health of the citizens. The amount of money allocated for healthcare is not justified if we look at the increasing chronic diseases and medical condition of the citizens. This increase in expenditure will affect both the healthcare organizations and the patients directly because sooner or later the Government will limit the public expenditure to a cut off and the rest of the expenditure has to be managed by the individual patients. This will not only increase the hardship to the patients but also will force the healthcare units to reduce their expenditure. There is a fear that with the increase in cost, the quality of healthcare will also be compromised especially in the private sector.

Challenge 2

While the first challenge is related to the effect of an increase in health care cost, the next one corresponds to the reason for that. It goes back to the scarcity of general physicians and physicians at primary health care that increases the cost. There are two ways to understand this issue - on one side, the absence of adequate primary care creates an advanced medical condition which incurs more cost and on the other side, people are unable to have good health due to inadequate preventive care in this level. The scarcity of physicians in this sector is a cause of extremely biased focus on developing specialists, their social position, and medical student's preference to join specialization and serve cities hospitals rather than being general practitioners and provide primary care. The increasing allocation to healthcare and disease control is impossible if the mechanism of primary and preventive care is absent.
