Question

You must visit and spend a minimum of 2 hours at a court of your choice. While traffic court is acceptable, attendance at traffic court will provide you with much less material and will be much less interesting than attendance at more formal court proceedings. During your visit, you will take notes on the types of cases being hears and the outcomes of the cases.

You paper must contain the following:

1. A description of the court you attended including the date you attended, name and address of the court, name of judge or justices presiding and a general description of the court room.

2. A summary of the cases you heard and the outcomes of the various cases.

3. A substantial discussion about the the way the cases were handled and whether you believe each cases and the overall way the cases were handled was fair.

4. A discussion about whether the court proceedings you observed were fair and just. Explain how and why you came to this conclusion. Were the court proceedings fundamentally fair? Was justice served? The paper should be a minimum of three pages, double spaced.

You CANNOT use Judge Judy or a television judge for this assignment.

Do NOT wait until the last minute to arrange your visit. Find out what days the courts around you meet and make your plans for a visit early on in case you run into a conflict with your time or there is an issue with the court and you have to reschedule.
