The challenges comes in the form of the different expectations individual contractors have, different level of understanding they may have, feeling as an individual, very different opinion, and acting as an individual in an individualist way just focusing on their own work with realizing the impact on the whole project.
The first step a manager should do to manage a team of individual contractor is to understand what they really want and which interests them most. They should understand which skills they have best, which area of interest they are liking for and what kind of opportunity they are looking for and understand what they are wanting from this assignment.
The next area is setting up the expectations. They have to be very precise and clear in setting up the expectations before them and what you want from them as an individual contractor and provide the fullest possible details.
Once the stage is set, gradually build a relationship with them and make them feel a part of the team and similar to an employee and not just an individual contractor and never try to micromanage them. They may not prefer to be micro managed, as they generally are self-sufficient in their skills and know what they are doing. Agree on the payment and hold that promise and do provide a feedback on a regular time period/interval, so that any mismatch in the output could be corrected with less amount of re-work.
If we want to shortly say, then understand what they are looking for from the arrangement, understand them and know them better and make them feel part of the team. Never hold your feedback, and no fall back on your commitments with them.

Team is really important for Lonely planet team, because any error from one side like the an error in the CE, may have subsequent errors in the freelance authors and so on and have an trail of errors, if they do not work as a team. In this type of work, they have to work as a team as one output becomes another’s input and so on and hence very important to ensure that the team knows the details and work as one.

When we say, purpose, it is the sense of purpose, which unifies the group. Everyone knows why the group exists. In addition to being clear, it should also be important.
Then should have measurable objectives, Goals are the fuel which drive each member’s effort. They know there is work to do, and they strive to get it done.
And comes the characteristics of Support, supporting one another, a bunch of individual contractors all doing their own thing in isolation from coworkers is not a team. Effective teams are collaborative and supportive entities which is very much required here
And finally being a team, feeling good about being a part of this team. Results without connection to teammates doesn’t work either. At the end of the day, people are glad they are a member of this team.
