Question
In Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_technology_management), Information Technology Management is defined as “… the discipline whereby all of the technology resources of a firm are managed in accordance with its needs and priorities.” [3] I suggest this is an excellent definition and also allows a broad spectrum of ways to achieve the course objectives listed in the syllabus. In 1 to 2 pages, please comment on this definition, and clearly state whether you agree with it or do not agree with it and why. Use our textbook material in your commentary.
Explanation / Answer
Information technology management
IT management is a discipline to manage IT resources. IT management is not only about managing IT resources, it is managing IT resources as per business needs or requirements. That IT department is serving the needs of the business without the business. It has to manage the IT resources as per business requirements.
IT resources:
The term IT resources entitles both entities tangible assets, that are own by the IT department as well as the staff, that is working to meet the needs of the IT department.
So, the term IT infrastructure refers to most of the tangible assets that come under the umbrella of IT resources including hardware & facilities, software can be tangible in this contest and network. Staff documentation and business process do not come under the umbrella IT infrastructure.
All these activities plus more will be going on within IT management domain to meet objective of managing the resources and some of these activities may not applied to some companies but it is a example.
So, IT Management and Management of Information System (MIS) are two related terms and sometimes confusing to some people as well.
